I really like the moment you take to include your mom’s job loss when talking about layoffs/the economic atmosphere at the time. It’s so easy to just nod your head at numbers but all of those people had families and lives that were disrupted.

Nice video, I've been using blender and we have similar visual style of video's but my videos are about cyber security. The only place where we differ in workflow is that i record paragraphs and edit it all in blender. Also damn you for telling other people the tricks (shakes fist) 😉

The project was financially mismanaged from the get go with a toxic workplace environment, and at the end all the backers attribute their failure to the US not giving them money instead of themselves. A republican president nowadays would never dare to make a speech that includes the words "soon we'll begin to tunnel below to learn... how the universe began". Scientific endeavors like that directly contradict with the modern GOP agenda, which is to never do anything that wouldn't be approved by the American evangelical christian voting population. In the 80s and 90s, we were able to put dozens of billions of dollars into megaprojects that maybe a couple hundred people in the whole world truly understands, and 30 years later those same voters in Texas are making tiktoks about vaccines, a medical technology any remotely educated person has understood for half a century. The decline in the relationship between scientists and politicians cannot be more apparent.

About the supposed benefit of the star wars program and making the soviets waste money. I theory true it was in practice a gamble. It only worked if the soviets would have actually believed that the star wars program was making progress and tried to keep up. But they really didn’t…like, at all. So yes it was a pretty big waste of money (jacob geller has a section about this in his space laser video which is pretty great).

I love to play this game of looking at any random problem in American society and asking myself "iiiiiis it ragans faul?" (often the answer is yes or at least partially yes). I guess I can add one more problem to that list…

What I personally think about this whole debacle is that Hwang apparently believed his own hype, even though he was 100% a fraudster, he was legitimately trying to fake it until he made it. He did believe he could create human stem cloned cells, he did believe he could make all those promises come to reality. I say this with somewhat a degree of certainty because as soon as he was off the hook, he went back to cloning, he actually did believe in this type of research, somehow. In his own twisted head, those were all means to an end he do believe its noble

Honestly the idea of having a star scientist that your populace can get behind is quite ingenious. The public has a name and a face that they can attached to and this superstar has a team under him doing the actual science while the face is doing PR work. This would grant a good chunk of funding for the work and if the face is good at their job it would also allow the public to get behind them and understand their work and why its important
